Rail Car Incident Response

Instructional Hours: 8.00

This program is designed for first arriving rail car firefighting and hazardous materials personnel and other interested Emergency Services personnel.

This seminar will cover several topics including:

  • Rail car design features and aspects of construction that would impact response strategies for rail tank cars that carry crude/flammable liquids
  • Characteristics of chemicals focusing on crude oil, ethanol and other flammable liquids
  • Hazardous materials recognition and identification strategies
  • Recognizing mitigation strategies including offensive, defensive, and non-intervention response strategies for fire and spill incidents
  • Hands-on scenarios using a mock rail car


Training provided by The Center for Rural Development (CRD) and All Hazards Training Center (AHTC) on behalf of the U.S. Department of Transportation, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Administration.
